Late on the evening of September 4, 2025, a quiet Wednesday transformed into a scene of unspeakable tragedy in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. In a crowded market on Jail Road, outside a small photo studio, Vishwakarma Chauhan confronted his estranged wife, Mamta (also known as Mukti) Chauhan, and—after a brief but heated argument—pulled out a pistol hidden in his helmet and fired two shots, one striking her chest and another her arm. Bystanders scrambled to help, rushing Mamta to a nearby private hospital, but she was pronounced dead on arrival.
According to witnesses, Vishwakarma lingered at the scene for nearly 25 minutes, repeating over and again that he was “very troubled by her.” Authorities soon arrived and took him into custody, ending the horrifying spectacle.
Mamta, aged approximately 35, had been separated from her husband for about eighteen months due to ongoing disputes over property and divorce settlement issues. She had been living with their 13-year-old daughter near Geeta Vatika, employed at a private firm on Bank Road. Vishwakarma had stayed separately, and tension between them had apparently escalated over child support, farmland transfer, and financial demands.
During interrogation, Vishwakarma reportedly admitted that he had planned the act and felt “no regret,” claiming Mamta was “eating away his money.” The daughter later filed a complaint citing harassment and infidelity on her father’s part. The police are investigating the source of the firearm and continuing their probe.
