11 Devotees Killed in SUV Canal Plunge, CM Announces ₹5 Lakh Aid

On August 3, 2025, in Gonda district, Uttar Pradesh, a tragic road accident claimed the lives of 11 devotees when an SUV plunged into the Saryu canal. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath immediately announced compensation of ₹5 lakh for the families of each deceased.

Incident Details

The vehicle, reportedly carrying 15 people from Seha village, was en route to the Prithvinath Temple in Khargupur to offer holy water. It slipped off a narrow roadside path near Belwa Bahuta, falling into the canal early on Sunday morning.

Rescue efforts by villagers and emergency services recovered 11 bodies from the submerged SUV. Among the deceased were six women, two men, and three children. Four survivors, including the driver, were critically injured and taken to a local hospital.

Relief and Government Response

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered heartfelt condolences and declared ₹5 lakh ex‑gratia for each family of the deceased. He also ordered prompt medical care for the injured and initiated a formal investigation into the accident.

District officials are identifying victims and coordinating with families for post‑mortem procedures.

Possible Causes

Eyewitnesses reported that the road was slippery due to early morning rain, and the SUV lost traction when the driver applied brakes, causing it to slide into the canal. The narrow roadside path passing close to the water added to the risk.

This tragic accident in Gonda highlights the dangers of poor road conditions and narrow routes alongside canals. With 11 devotees losing their lives and others injured, it reflects the urgent need for better safety measures during pilgrimages. The government’s swift support and inquiry may help families cope and prevent similar incidents in the future.
