The night of August 26–27 turned perilous when the Beas River’s water level surged dramatically, inundating low-lying areas near Arni University in Indora. The floodwaters reached the university premises, prompting an emergency alert to the authorities.

427 Lives Saved at Arni University

Acting swiftly, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), supported by local authorities, orchestrated a daring rescue. In a tense overnight operation, 412 students and 15 staff members—totaling 427 people—were safely evacuated from the flooded campus.

Continued Rescue Efforts Nearby

The rescue work continued beyond the campus. In nearby areas—the Mand and Sanor regions of Indora—26 more individuals (19 men and 7 women) were rescued under the supervision of Deputy Commandant Lalit Mohan Singh.

Pilgrims in Peril Saved in Chamba

Meanwhile, in Chamba district, the sacred Shri Manimahesh Yatra was underway when floods and harsh weather halted pilgrim movement. NDRF, along with Himachal Pradesh Police and civil officials, set up temporary rope bridges near Gauri Kund and employed mountaineering gear to escort 3,269 pilgrims (1,730 men, 1,259 women, and 280 children) safely to Dunali. Other teams then took over their onward journey to Hadsar.

Over 3,700 Rescued in Two Days

Across Kangra and Chamba districts, a massive rescue operation unfolded over August 26–27. The NDRF’s coordinated efforts led to the rescue of 3,737 people in just two days—demonstrating their remarkable effectiveness during this natural disaster.
