A shocking crime shook Balrampur district in Uttar Pradesh when a 22-year-old deaf-mute woman was assaulted late at night on 11 August 2025. The incident happened near Bahadurpur area of Dehat Kotwali police station. CCTV footage of the victim running for help and the accused chasing her quickly went viral, sparking outrage and anger across the region.

How the Incident Happened
According to police, the woman was returning from her uncle’s house when two men on a motorcycle followed her. They took her to a nearby field and assaulted her. Later, locals found her in shock near her house. A medical examination confirmed that she was sexually assaulted.
CCTV Footage Goes Viral
The crime was partially captured by a CCTV camera installed near a public place. The footage showed the woman running and the accused following her on a bike. This video was widely shared on social media, putting huge pressure on the police to act quickly.
Police Action Within 24 Hours
Acting on the footage and eyewitness accounts, police identified the accused as Ankur Verma (21) and Harshit Pandey (22).
- Both men were trying to flee towards the Nepal border.
- Early the next morning, police intercepted them. The accused fired at police, leading to an encounter.
- Both were injured in the exchange and later admitted their crime.
Negligence and Suspension
The victim’s family claimed the assault happened near a police outpost, but many CCTV cameras in the area were not working. This raised serious questions about security and law enforcement in the district. As a result, five police personnel were suspended for negligence.
Victim’s Condition and Investigation
The woman is currently stable in hospital and is communicating details of the incident through sign language experts. Police are still investigating to determine if more people were involved and to gather additional evidence.
