WASHINGTON, June 20, 2025 — Former President Donald Trump signaled on Truth Social on Friday that an agreement with Harvard University could be finalized “over the next week or so,” describing it as “mindbogglingly historic”.
The announcement follows a significant legal setback for the Trump administration, when U.S. District Judge Allison Burroughs in Boston issued a preliminary injunction preventing the government from revoking Harvard’s certification to host international students under the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP). The administration had sought this move amid allegations of antisemitism on campus, which also triggered threats to strip billions in federal research funding.
Trump posted, “Many people have been asking… what is going on with Harvard University and their largescale improprieties that we have been addressing, looking for a solution. We have been working closely with Harvard, and it is very possible that a Deal will be announced over the next week or so.” He added, “If a Settlement is made on the basis that is currently being discussed, it will be ‘mindbogglingly’ HISTORIC, and very good for our Country”.
The dispute intensified after the administration cut more than $2.6 billion in federal grants and attempted to bar Harvard from admitting roughly 7,000 international students — about 25–27 percent of its student population. Harvard responded by filing lawsuits, arguing that the actions violated its First Amendment and immigration rights.
While Harvard has not yet commented on the possibility of a settlement, a school representative expressed relief at the court’s decision, stating that it "allows Harvard to continue enrolling international students and scholars while the case moves forward".
As both sides appear to be in active negotiations, a historic resolution may soon emerge—potentially ending a months‑long standoff over academic freedom, governance reforms, antisemitism, and foreign student policies
